Google play Music and YouTube Red getting merge together in the form of mega streaming platform
Two of Google’s most important services, Google Play Music and YouTube Red might merge together to form a mega streaming platform. The head of music at YouTube, Lyor Cohen has said that this merger is going to take place and a new service is going to be created. The reason behind this merger is that the companies want to bring more subscribers in for the new entity as a whole.
Lyor Cohen has also said that this merger will be aimed towards improving relations with the music labels. He has sad, “In my mind, the missing piece on building these businesses is collaborating with the [music] industry, and not just making deals and going away and seeing how it works.”
Another reason might also be because YouTube Red is not that popular amongst music listeners. This service allows users to remove advertisements, watch videos in the background and save the videos offline. Google Play Music, on the other hand, works as both a free streaming service and a paid service to download songs. It is also the music player on Android smartphones.
Rumours about this merger have existed in the past. These rumours were only elevated when the product teams of both the services were asked to work with one another. The Verge has reported that this merger is not going to affect the subscribers of either of the services and that the users of both services will be notified before the merger takes place.
Google, in a statement to Verge has said that, “Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”
The merger is going to make it easier for the users. Although both the services exist and work independently, the subscription to either one of the two gives access to the other service as well.
It still remains to be seen what will be done in those countries where only one of the two services are available. In India, YouTube Red has not been launched as a service yet. However, Google Play Music and its subscription do exist in India. There have been rumours about the launch of YouTube Red in India, but
there is no confirmation as of now. Google has, however, said that the current subscriptions are not going to be affected in any way. Only time will be able to tell how Google will tackle this problem and how successful this combined platform will be.
