Xiaomi launched its latest smartphone, the Redmi 5A, in the Indian market on November 30, after its launch in China in October. It comes as a successor to Redmi 4A, which was priced at Rs.5,999. The new Redmi 5A has two variants, the 2GB RAM with 16GB storage version has a price tag of Rs.5,999. In an exclusive launch offer, it has been priced at Rs.4,999 for the first 5 million buyers. The 3GB RAM with 32GB storage version is available for Rs.6,999.
The USP of the phone is clearly its battery life. Running on a 3000mAh battery, the device claims to have 8 days of standby time and supports 7 hours of video playback. Available in attractive colours such as Dark Grey, Gold and Rose Gold, it weighs 137 grams and has dimensions of 140.4×70.1×8.35 mm.
The phone is powered by quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SOC, which is clocked at 1.4GHz. It supports a dual camera technology, with a 13 megapixel rear lens and a 5 MP front lens. The touchscreen is a 5-inch high definition display, with a pixel density of 296ppi.
Redmi 5A, in collaboration with Reliance Jio, is providing exclusive cashback offers where users will need to recharge their accounts with the Rs.199 pack for 12 months. At the end of this period, Jio will provide a cashback of Rs.1,000, in the form of 10 vouchers of Rs.100 each.
The Indian version comes with a micro SD card slot as compared to the hybrid dual-sim slot of the Chinese version. Redmi 5A will face stiff competition in the market from other players, in the cost- effective smartphone category. Nokia 2 priced at Rs.6,000 and and Micromax Bharat 5 priced at Rs.5,555 are the two phones that Xiaomi has to watch out for.
