On Day 2 of the MWC 2018, being held at Barcelona in Spain, Asus launched its ZenFone 5 series smartphones, which include three main variants – the ZenFone 5Z, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5 Lite. All three are very similar in design and in most of the specifications.
All three models are powered by Qualcomm processors and come equipped with dual cameras and the Asus ZeniMoji, a counterpart of Apple’s Animoji.
The flagship phone of the smartphone maker has been placed in the premium price segment, with a price starting from EUR 479 (approx. Rs.38,400). It runs Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, with the new ZenUi 5.0. The device is fitted with a 6.2-inch full HD+ display, with an aspect ratio of 18:9. This gives it a 90% screen-to-body ratio. At the core lies the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with the Artificial Intelligence Engine and Adreno GBU.
The phone is available in three variants – 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage, 6GB RAM with 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM with 256GB internal storage. The ZenFone 5Z sports a dual rear camera setup, with the primary camera at 12MP and secondary camera at 8MP sensor. The front camera also has an 8MP sensor. Along with a three-axis EIS for both the front and rear cameras, there is a face unlock feature and real-time beautification feature.
Connectivity options include 4G Volte, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/A-GPS, NFC, FM Radio, USB Type-C and a 3.5 mm jack for headphones. Packed inside is a 3300mAh battery and there is a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel.
The ZenFone 5 also runs the Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box and is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC coupled with 4GB or 6GB RAM. Both offer internal storage of 64GB. All the other specifications of ZenFone 5 match that of ZenFone 5Z. Both these phones are available in Midnight Blue and Meteor Silver color options.
This one runs Android 8.0 Oreo and sports a smaller 6-inch full HD+ screen, with IPS display. The screen-to-body ratio is 80%, unlike the other two variants. The lite version is available in two different processor units. One is the Snapdragon 430 Octa-core SoC and the other is the Snapdragon 630 octa-core SoC.
Storage and RAM specifications are also of two types; one with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and the other with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The device has a dual front camera setup, with primary camera having a 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor and secondary camera having an 8MP sensor.
Other features of the phone are similar to the two earlier versions. ZenFone 5 Lite will be available in Midnight Black, Rouge Red and Moonlight White color options.
The ZenFone 5 series is being touted as the most intelligent ZenFone series ever, with advanced AI algorithms and big data analytics. The ZenFone 5 Lite will be the first one to arrive in the market, expected sometime in March. Following that, the ZenFone 5 will come in April and ZenFone 5Z will become available in June.
