Google, the search engine giant, has entered the already occupied world of personalized news feeds. The search engine giant has made the news feed personalized according to the preferences of the user, on its mobile applications on Android and iOS.

Before introducing this feature, Google had Google Now which was running on its application. This feature was a predictive search one that would display information such as personalized traffic, sports, weather and other such information. This content has now been moved over to the updates tab, which will not display on the main page of Google.

The personalized feed page is going to display articles on the basis of the topics that the users have followed in the past as well as whatever their search history shows. According to the current update, whenever the user opens the search bar on Google, a series of articles will be displayed under the search bar. These articles will be shown in the form of a stream of cards.

As of now, Google is not going to be including any form of advertisements in the feed. However, there is always a possibility that the will look to make money off the service later on. The articles, also, are not arranged in order of timeliness. Google is working towards making sure that the articles are arranged in terms of when they have been released so that the most recent articles can be on the top of the feed. The feed does not support the streaming of videos, which is why the users will have to move to another application to do the same.

If there is a particular story or genre that the user is not interested in reading about, they will have an option of un-following it as well. All that the user will be required to do is tap on the card and choose the un-follow button for the particular news item.

On the other hand, users will also have an option to follow the news that they are interested in. All that one has to do is press the follow button that will now appear next to a number of articles on Google. By pressing the three dots on the top of the card, you can also share the item that is on your feed, onto other forms of social network.

Google has carried out this move to bring back the users who are now relying on Facebook and Twitter for their news consumption. They are also competing with voice assistants like Siri, Cortana and Alexa that are eliminating the using of Google to find out information.

Google has a long way to go if it wants to make it’s feed as adaptive and as timely as that of Facebook and Twitter. Only time will be able to tell if they will be able to compete with the news feed giants like Twitter and Facebook, or if their news feed will simply fade away.
