President Trump, in his interview, has said that, "I spoke to (Cook), he's promised me three big plants
According to an interview that President Donald Trump has given the Wall Street Journal, Tim Cook has promised him that he is going to be building three manufacturing plants in the United States itself.
President Trump, in his interview, has said that, “I spoke to (Cook), he’s promised me three big plants – big, big, big.” Apple, on the other hand, has declined to comment on this statement given by the President.
The President of the United States has also said that he discussed a number of other things with the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, such as tax reforms. He also said that Tim Cook has called him to confirm that the plans for these manufacturing plants are going ahead.
When Donald Trump was campaigning to become President of the United States, his ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign had put Apple under fire. In a speech given by him in January last year, he said that he was going to make sure that Apple started building their computers and other parts in the United States instead of in other countries. He wanted Apple to start creating jobs for Americans first instead of carrying its manufacturing process in countries such as China.
President Trump also told the Wall Street Journal that he had told Tim Cook that he wouldn’t consider his administration to be an economic success until Apple didn’t start building its plants within the United States.
As of now, Apple has most of its manufacturers in China while the designers and the developers are from the United States itself. They also employ a few contract manufacturers from within the US. The displays are made inside a factory in Corning, which is in Kentucky. The Wi-Fi and cell radios are made in Texas while the processors are made in New York and Austin.
Despite all this, the number of people Apple employs in China outnumbers the ones that are employed in the United States. In China, Apple has hundreds of thousands people working inside the manufacturing plants. The United States, however, only has 80,000 employees, most of who work in the retail stores.
Tim Cook, in May, had said that the company would be creating a fund of one billion dollars which would be investing in advanced manufacturing within the United States. One of Apples’ major contractors, Foxconn, has also said that it has plans to invest more than 10 billion dollars in a display making factory. This factory will most likely be situated in Wisconsin, which is within the United States itself.
President Trump’s interview, however, has not given any specifics to the Wall Street Journal. There is no information about where the manufacturing plants are going to be located, how many people are going to be employed by these plants and which products are going to be produced by them. All we can do now is wait for Apple to give an official statement so that all the details are made clear.
