The biggest highlight of Axon M is that it has two displays, held together by a hinge. The two screens can unfold to make up one giant screen.
Smartphones have come a long, long way over the past decade. Yet, smartphone innovation is exhibiting no signs of plateauing. Bezel-less displays had only recently become a buzzword, and now there’s already something new to flaunt. Foldable smartphones!
While the leading cellphone makers were busy trying to outdo each other in terms of full-screen displays and powerful cameras, Chinese handset maker ZTE went ahead and launched a dual-screen foldable smartphone: The Axon M.
The biggest highlight of Axon M is that it has two displays, held together by a hinge. The two screens can unfold to make up one giant screen. ZTE said that the device could easily fit in a pocket, when folded.
So, you can fold the phone to have two 5.2-inch displays – one on the front and one on the back. Else, you can open up the phone to make one 6.75-inch display, albeit separated by a hinge.
While Axon M offers a host of features and options, the one drawback that ZTE had to settle for is the size and weight of the handset. Since it is a dual-screen device, Axon M is much thicker (12.1mm) and heavier (230 grams) than the slick smartphones we are accustomed to these days.
The smartphone has four modes. The Dual mode allows you to use different apps on different screens and is great for multitasking.
The Extend mode allows you to open one app across both the screens for easy viewing. This mode is perfect for playing games on a full-HD display of 6.75 inches. You could also use this mode to stream emails.
The Mirror mode allows you to mirror the same content on both screen, with the two screens in different directions. The Traditional mode enables you to use the handset as a regular smartphone.
Axon M features two 5.2-inch screens when folded, with full-HD TFT LCD displays. The screens have 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.
Axon M is an Android 7.1.2 Nougat-based handset that is powered by a 2.15 GHz, Quad-core Snapdragon 821 processor. It packs a 3180 mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 3.0.
The smartphone comes with 4 GB of RAM and internal storage of 64 GB, which is expandable up to 256 GB via a microSD card.
It has a 20 MP camera. Yes, there is only one camera and it can be used for both rear and front-facing shots. The camera has phase-detection autofocus, f/1.8 aperture, Sony’s IMX350 sensor and dual LED flash. Axon M has dual speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
ZTE said at the launch of Axon M, “Consumers need and expect more from their current smartphone and we are proud to collaborate with carriers around the world and AT&T in the US to transform their mobile experience.”
Axon M is scheduled to hit stores in the US in November and ZTE plans to launch the phone in several markets across the world over the next few months.
