Xiaomi’s 2018 flagship smartphone, Mi 7, is likely to be launched in the first quarter of next year. According to news reports, the upcoming model is expected to come with a 3D face unlock technology in place of a fingerprint scanner. The Mi 7 may be the first phone to follow in the footsteps of Apple, which has replaced the Touch ID sensor with a Face ID authentication feature.
The MyDrivers report suggests that the company will ditch the technology in favor of the facial recognition feature. Rumors indicate that even Huawei and Vivo are likely to use a facial authentication technology in their upcoming smartphones. Going by these rumors, in all likelihood, the 2018 model of Mi 7 will come with a nearly bezel-less display. This is in tune with the trend of full-screen smartphones this year. Xiaomi has launched two Mi Mix phones, the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus, sporting narrow bezels this year.

Also, the Mi 7 is likely to be powered by a Snapdragon 845 SoC and may have 6GB RAM, a dual rear camera setup and a 3200mAh battery.
Currently, a f few phones like the OnePlus 5, 5T and Honor View 10 offer facial recognition technology. It is expected that the 2018 models from several other smartphone makers will offer fingerprint as well as 3D face recognition sensors.
