It is expected that this entry-level Android smartphone with a 2-day battery life will cost around Rs.6,000 and will be released in the country sometime in mid-November.
HMD Global has launched the Nokia 2, a budget smartphone, in India. The handset was unveiled at a hands-on session on a moving metro train in New Delhi. The company has not yet divulged details regarding the price and delivery date. However, it is expected that this entry-level Android smartphone with a 2-day battery life will cost around Rs.6,000 and will be released in the country sometime in mid-November. With the launch of Nokia 2 HMD Global is at tapping the lower end segment offering phones ranging from Rs.6,500 to Rs.9,700. This segment comprises 17% (in terms of volume) of the worldwide smartphone market and over 30% volume in the Indian sub-continent.
At the event Nokia’s Director of Product and Portfolio, Pranav Shroff said, “Nokia has always been a people’s brand, and with the new avatar of Nokia mobiles we are looking to continue to be a people’s brand and to bring our full range of portfolio of smart as well as feature phones to the consumers out there. We will continue to be a company and a brand that delivers a device for everyone.”
There had been speculations regarding the launch of Nokia 7 in India, with the company unveiling this model in China in October. The launch of Nokia 2 mobile phone comes post the launch of Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 in early 2017 followed by Nokia 8 later in the country. Qualcomm’s India head, Larry Paulson, said during the event, “We all know the history of Nokia and how strong it was in India. Yes, 2017 is a different world but it’s a big market and there is a lot of room for many brands to be successful. If Nokia executes, they have a solid chance of being a winner in the market.”
The most touted feature of Nokia 2 is its 4100mAh battery which can last for two days on a single charge. The handset’s Snapdragon 212 SoC feature is expected to enhance the life of the battery. Another USP of the new handset is that it has a 5-inch HD LTPS display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. HMD Global claims that this display is best-in-class as it offers a contrast ratio of 1:1300 and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The Nokia 2 is powered by Snapdragon 212 as well as a Adreno 304 GPU. Although the company did not reveal details about RAM and internal storage, the handset is likely to have 1GB RAM and an internal storage capacity of 8 GB. This storage capacity is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD slot card in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration.
As for cameras, the handset features a 5-megapixel front fixed focus camera and a rear 8-megapixel r autofocus camera which offers LED flash. In terms of connectivity, the Nokia 2 comprises 4G VoLTE, Micro USB, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, FM Radio with RDS, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Moreover, the handset features a digital compass, an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor.
The Nokia 2 will be available in three colours – Pewter Black sporting a black face and frame, Copper comprising a black face and black back, and a copper frame and Pewter White with a white face and a black frame.
